00:00:00 “ONE-CLICK SETUP”

Three minutes
to subtitles.

The extension isn't on the Chrome Web Store yet, so it installs by “loading a folder” — no commands to type, just the six steps on this page. Start by downloading the package.

live-subtitle-extension.zip
  • Version v0.1.2
  • ~750 KB
  • Chrome 116+
  • Windows · macOS

00:00:30 “INSTALL GUIDE · STEP BY STEP”

Six illustrated steps —
just follow along.

Every step comes with a screen mock-up; the time on the left is roughly how far along you are. Stuck? Check the FAQ at the bottom first.

  1. 00:00

    Download the package

Click the “Download extension (ZIP)” button above. Chrome saves live-subtitle-extension.zip to your Downloads folder and shows a download-complete notice near the top-right (or bottom) of the window. It's only about 750 KB — a few seconds at most.

    • Can't find the file? Press Ctrl + J (⌘ + Shift + J on macOS) to open Chrome's download history.
    • If Chrome asks “Do you want to keep this file?”, choose “Keep” — it's the installer served directly by this site.
  2. 00:30

    Unzip into a folder

The ZIP has to be extracted into a regular folder before Chrome can load it. You'll end up with a folder named live-subtitle-extension.

    Windows

In your Downloads folder, right-click the ZIP → “Extract All…”, then click “Extract”. The extracted folder opens automatically when it finishes.

    macOS

In Finder, double-click the ZIP — it unpacks automatically and the folder appears next to it.

    Important

Put the folder somewhere it won't get deleted (e.g. Documents). After installing, Chrome keeps running the extension from this folder — delete the folder and the extension stops working.

  3. 01:00

    Open the extensions page

Copy the URL below and paste it into Chrome's address bar, then press Enter. (Pages that start with chrome:// can't be opened by clicking a link — they must be pasted into the address bar.)

    chrome://extensions
    chrome://extensions Enter
Extensions ← this page means you're in the right place
    • Prefer not to paste? Click Chrome's menu (top right) → “Extensions” → “Manage Extensions” — it's the same page.
  4. 01:30

    Turn on “Developer mode”

In the top-right corner of the extensions page there's a “Developer mode” switch — turn it on. A new row of buttons appears at the top left; that's what the next step uses.

    chrome://extensions
    Extensions Developer mode
Load unpacked Pack extension Update ← this row appears once it's on
    Note

“Developer mode” is just Chrome's blanket term for installs that don't come from the store — it doesn't change any other browser behavior. Once the extension is published on the store, the switch won't be needed anymore.

  5. 02:00

    Load unpacked, pick the folder

Click “Load unpacked” at the top left — a folder picker opens. Select the folder you extracted in step 2 and confirm.

    ✓ Pick this level
    📁 live-subtitle-extension manifest.json popup.html …

If opening the folder shows manifest.json directly, that's the one.

    ✗ Not this level
    📁 Downloads 📁 live-subtitle-extension live-subtitle-extension.zip

Picking the outer folder (or the ZIP itself) shows “Manifest file is missing”.

  6. 02:30

Confirm it installed, pin it to the toolbar

If a Subruu card appears on the page with a blue (enabled) switch at its bottom-right, you're done. Finally, click the puzzle-piece icon 🧩 at the top right of the browser, find Subruu, and click the pin next to it — from then on, subtitles are one click away.

    chrome://extensions 🧩
    Subruu 川流字幕

    🧩 → Subruu → 📌 Pin ← pin it so it's easy to find
    • Video tabs that were already open before installing need one refresh before the extension takes effect.
  7. 00:03:00 · LIVE Installed. Time for subtitles. Next: sign in & use it
00:03:00 “AFTER INSTALLING”

Three steps to your
first subtitle line.

  1. 1

Click the Subruu icon in the toolbar and sign in with Email or Google — it's the same account as this site's membership; balance and usage stay in sync.

  2. 2

    Open a video, pick languages

Open YouTube, Twitch or any HTML5 video, and choose the source and target languages in the extension. YouTube's default mode is the cheapest; for Twitch / IG Live pick “Live delay sync”.

  3. 3

    Hit start, watch subtitles

The floating subtitle window appears automatically — adjust position, font and opacity while you watch. Transcripts save to your member account.

00:04:00 “FAQ”

Stuck?
Look here first.

Q1 It says “Manifest file is missing”

Almost always the wrong folder level: you picked the outer folder, or the ZIP itself. Go back to step 5 and re-select the folder where manifest.json is directly visible when you open it.

If unzipping produced an extra nested folder with the same name (some unzip tools do this), pick the innermost one.

Q2 Chrome restarts with “Disable developer mode extensions”

That's Chrome's routine reminder for every extension not installed from the store. Just close it with the “×” — don't click “Disable”. The extension keeps working normally, and the prompt goes away once it's published on the store.

Q3 How do I update to a new version?

Come back to this page, download the latest ZIP, unzip it and replace the contents of the same folder (keep the folder in the same place), then go to chrome://extensions and click the refresh ↻ icon on the Subruu card.

Updating in the same folder keeps your sign-in and settings; loading a brand-new folder means signing in again.

Q4 Installed, but no subtitles on the video

Check three things in order:

① Click the extension icon and confirm you're signed in with available credits; ② refresh the video tab once (tabs opened before installing need a reload); ③ once on the video page, remember to press “Start” in the extension panel — subtitles don't start by themselves.

Q5 Can I delete the extracted folder? How do I remove the extension?

Don't delete the folder while you use the extension — Chrome runs it straight from that folder, so deleting it breaks the extension.

To remove it, go to chrome://extensions and click “Remove” on the Subruu card; after that both the folder and the ZIP can be deleted. Your account and credits live in the cloud — removing the extension doesn't touch them.

All set — time for your first stream.

New members can start right after signing in. Credits are pay-as-you-go, never expire, no subscription — the Starter Pack is the best way to try it.
